For the ethereal, azure sculpture that gives shape to this fountain, Diana Policarpo has created an aquatic world of non-human and superhuman beings, blending biology and mythology. The work’s form is inspired by that of Chondrocladia Lampadiglobus, a rare deep-sea carnivorous sponge that lives anchored to ocean sediments, feeding through globular, floating filaments. On the surface, within its earthly sphere, the fountain pays homage to the anguanes—guardian entities of the mountains, forests, streams, and waters—figures typical of the ancient oral traditions of the Alpine regions and, in particular, of Ladin culture. Conceived in 2024 for the ninth Gherdëina Biennale, the sculpture was submerged in the fountain at the center of the courtyard of Castel Gardena. It reappears here in a new version produced for the Parco d’arte, evoking the forms of life and narrative themes that the artist uses to weave together her reflections on feminism, interspecies relationships, and myth, in a quest to transcend the dualism between nature and culture and the impulse to categorize and colonize nature.
