COLONNA PER UNO STILITA

Audio description

1996 - 2022

metal , fiberglass

Colonna per uno stilita (Column for a Stylite) is a site-specific installation, inspired by the namesake sculpture that was realised originally in 1996 for "I Murazzi dalla cima", a project designed by Arienti on the west bank of the river Po, near the centre of Turin. The work consists of a metal and fibreglass column, a portion of a Tuscan-style pillar with a square section that emerges directly from the ground. The column alludes to the medium-length film Simón del desierto (1964) by Luis Buñuel, whose protagonist is a stylite monk intent in resisting temptations in a vast desert. Inserted in the hillside like an archaeological find, the artist's sculpture is an ironic and playful invitation for the public to interact with the work.
